Good News for CA Students: IGNOU Now Accepts ICAI Course Credits

New Delhi, June 23, 2025: In a significant development for Chartered Accountancy aspirants, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has announced that it will now accept ICAI course credits from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI). This policy update allows students to transfer credits earned through ICAI directly into IGNOU’s commerce and management programs, marking a major milestone in higher education flexibility.

The university issued an official notification on May 23, 2025, following approval from its Academic Council during the 83rd meeting held on February 18, 2025. The move enables students enrolled in B.COMGOL, B.COMG, B.COMFOL, B.COMF, M.COM, and M.COMOL programs to claim exemptions for equivalent ICAI subjects they have already cleared. These credit transfers can be applied once per course and remain valid for up to seven years.

In a student-friendly gesture, IGNOU has waived the typical course change and credit transfer fees. The authorities have introduced a nominal one-time, non-refundable processing fee—INR 500 for up to 16 credits and INR 1,000 for more than 16 credits. This makes the process financially accessible while maintaining administrative efficiency.

CA aspirants who have successfully completed the Intermediate or Final level of ICAI are now eligible to transfer ICAI course credits towards relevant IGNOU programs. This enables them to pursue a recognized university degree while continuing their professional journey. IGNOU offers a 3-year B.Com program for CA students at an approximate cost of INR 8,100. The M.Com program spans 2 years and costs around INR 17,600.

The credit transfer policy aims to ease academic pressure on students who are managing professional training alongside academic goals. By aligning IGNOU’s curriculum with ICAI’s professional structure, the university promotes a dual-advantage pathway for learners.

IGNOU Admissions 2025 for the July session are currently open. Eligible candidates can apply through the official IGNOU portal(ignou.ac.in). This collaboration with ICAI reaffirms IGNOU’s commitment to accessible, flexible, and professionally relevant education for Indian learners.
